BiographyBorn and raised in London, England, I started painting at age five. Afer high school, I went on to study art at the Byam Shaw School of Painting and Drawing, the Central School of Art and Design and the Camden Arts Centre in London. After studying and working for a while, I embarked on a seven-year worldwide tour, stopping in France, Greece, Israel, Afghanistan, India, Sri Lanka, Bali and Japan to study, paint and work. Arriving in California in 1981, I was introduced to Santa Cruz by a fellow artist and decided to stay. Continuing my studies in art and design, I worked as a sign painter, logo designer and interior design consultant. In 1997 my paintings began to sell and in 1990 I became a full-time artist. My work evolved from oils and watercolors into large, acrylic landscapes of California, Tuscany and Provence. Each year I traveled back to Europe to gain new inspiration and to visit family and friends. Recently I have become more involved in painting California landscapes and abstracts. My technique includes not only paintbrushes, but also natural sponges and palette knives to create a unique, textural style often compared to pointillism, a branch of neo-impressionism. This way of painting produces a shimmering effect of light and color where the viewer is drawn in to escape to a world of beauty and serenity. My new abstract work includes acrylic and mixed media. I collage many interesting things to my paintings, including tissue paper, cut-up magazines, broken glass and beads, metallic foil and small found objects. From late April through October, I show my work at juried art festivals throughout the San Francisco Bay Area and participate in the Open Studios Tour of Santa Cruz County. Come and see my latest work at upcoming shows or call for a studio appointment or private viewing in your home or office. Please take a moment to sign my guestbook if you have not already done so.
